As high energy requirements and slow speeds push us to find alternatives to the proof-of-work algorithm, consensus models are now being used and investigated to deal with open-ended participation.

To protect data and uphold the state of the blockchain, consensus algorithms have to withstand node failures, network partitions and delayed and corrupted messages.

Avoiding a centralised monopoly — with those with the highest stakes controlling the blockchain — is another issue that is being addressed in the proof-of-stake model.

A functional, efficient and secure consensus algorithm is certainly necessary, but how can it be achieved?
